How do I know that the person advertising is a genuine IML?
An International Mountain Leader (IML) will have completed all their
training and assessment courses. The Union of International Mountain
Leader Associations (UIMLA) requires that a practising IML is a member
of a National Association (such as BAIML) and that they hold
professional indemnity insurance. BAIML issues the UIMLA Carnet, which is a credit-card style professional document with a photograph
, a unique identifying number, and an annual validating stamp which
certifies that the IML is a current member and that they have
insurance. Only current Full and Aspirant members of BAIML are listed
on this website.
Aspirant members may lead groups in the UK, within the remit of their
existing qualifications, but may only work abroad if supervised by a Full IML or
IFMGA/UIAGM Mountain Guide.
You can check if the person is a Full or Aspirant British IML by
contacting the BAIML membership offices at MLTUK on +44(0) 1690 720272 or email us here.
Participation Statement
BAIML recognises that mountaineering is an activity with a danger of
personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be
aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own
actions and involvement. Hiring a professionally qualified leader does
not prevent accidents from happening.
